Pediatrics and Child Health - Best Care for Your Children

Just this morning as I was jogging (Yes I jog), I saw a lady who was taking her son to the school. The kid was about 6 years old and had a runny nose. As they were walking ahead of me I overheard him complaining about stomach ache. His mom, who I believe runs a very tight ship didn’t pay any heed to him and asked him to stop making excuses. It made me think the whole way home. What if the little boy was telling truth? I mean I didn’t used to but maybe others kids are more genuine than I was.

It’s almost disheartening to see a kid fall sick (yeah adults too, but they can handle). And then they get all these medications, injections and whatnot. They can’t explain most symptoms and their parents get worried. I remember when I was a kid; I used to get sick very often. I had a fever, cold and cough almost every season. So today I wanted to see what kind of diseases other kids face nowadays. Here are few of the parents’ nightmares:

Common Cold: Too aptly named, it really is very common. We all know the steps treat a mild fever, congestion, coughing, and a sore throat which can be treated with lots of fluids and rest. If your child still seems uncomfortable, children's ibuprofen or acetaminophen will work. Most doctors advice to steer away from cold and cough medications. It usually goes away in five to seven days.

Croup: It is caused by viruses.  It is characterized by obstruction of breathing caused by narrowing of upper airway passages. Its symptoms are barking, brassy cough, with noisy inspiration, labored breathing.  The child may have flaring of the nostrils, or using neck muscles while breathing. Lots of fluids and humidifier are suggested as a part of the remedy.

Gastroenteritis: More than just tummy ache, this is as common a disease as it is an excuse. Also known as a stomach bug, it causes vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. A variety of viruses can cause gastroenteritis. Most stomach viruses clear up within a few days to a week and require nothing more than rest and fluids. One thing to keep in mind is to not give too much fluid at once instead give little fluid at 15 minutes gap.
I really wish that they’d make a vaccine for these things too.
